The Mexia Ladycats led by Head Coach Randy Barger made history for Mexia High School. The Ladycats finished the season 38-3 overall. The Ladycats defeated Jasper, Madisonville, La Vega, Buna, Fairfield, and Krum on their way to the state title game. The Ladycats faced the Kennedale Lady Wildcats. This would be the first trip to the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas for the Mexia Ladycats. Mexia opened up the game hot with a 9-2 lead before Kennedale closed the first quarter with a 12-1 run to take a 17-12 lead. The Lady Wildcats jumped out to their largest lead of the game early on the second quarter 29-20. The Ladycats then rattled of 10 unanswered points to take a 30-29 lead before going into the half tied at 33-all. The third quarter was tightly contested has both teams traded baskets before Mexia closed the third quarter with a 50-47 lead. Kennedale would jump out to an early fourth quarter lead but that wouldn't last long. The Ladycats began a 9-0 run to lead Kennedale. The Lady Wildcats would close the lead to 64-62 with just under 30 seconds to play. Senior, Brechelle Beachum was fouled and went to the line looking to create seperation. The senior missed both, but was able to steal the ball from behind after the rebound. She was fouled again and went back to the line, sinking both attempts this time and extending the lead to four. Freshmen Na'Teisha Owens would add a free throw and Beachum ended the game with a breakaway layup as time expired. Na'Teisha Owens would finish the game with 23 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals to earn the Most Valuable Player Award.
